KS1 Computing

Intent

Pupils are taught to create and debug simple programs using simple algorithms. Pupils use a wide range of technology to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. Embedded within all curriculum subjects, children are taught to use technology safely and respectfully keeping their personal information private.

Knowledge and Key Skills Progression Grid:

COMPUTING – EYFS & KS1 Knowledge and Key Skills – updated September 2022

Implementation

In Key Stage One, the main scheme used for Computing is taken from the  National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE).  Their vision is for every child in every school in England to have a world-leading computing education.

The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) is funded by the Department for Education and supporting partners, and marks a significant investment in improving the provision of computing education in England.

In Key Stage One, pupils receive an hourly lesson per week to learn and practice a new computing skill.

Technology is also embedded across the curriculum to allow pupils to use apply their knowledge and skills in a range of concepts and teachers plan a termly cross-curricular project.  We have a wealth of technology such as recording and coding devices to enhance the wider curriculum.

For more information on termly curriculum content and coverage of key skills and knowledge, please visit our class pages, where you will find termly Curriculum Information for Parents.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage One most children:

Computer Science

  • Use a range of precise instructions (e.g. direction, angles, turns).
  • Predict what the outcome of a simple program will be (logical reasoning).
  • Debug a program.
  • Understand that algorithms are used on digital devices.

Information Technology

  • Organise, retrieve and change digital content.
  • Record sound and play back.
  • Use devices to take a range of photos.
  • Navigate the web to complete simple searches.

Digital Literacy

  • Use technology respectfully and know where to go for help, if concerned or feel unsafe.
  • Know how technology is used in school and outside of school.
  • Select appropriate software to complete a given task e.g. PowerPoint, Microsoft Word.
