Curriculum – Maths

In this section of the website, you will find information about our approach to teaching Maths at Lumley Junior School.

Intent

At Lumley Junior School, we use the National Curriculum for Mathematics so that all pupils

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, and develop the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically and explain their thinking
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics knowledge

At Lumley Juniors, we view Maths as being essential to everyday life and promote a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths. No matter what their starting points, we help children to achieve excellence.

Our high-quality Maths curriculum provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.  We aim to shape assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of Maths. We strive for our pupils to become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in Maths, but also support them across the curriculum.

Implementation

We provide pupils with a mastery approach to Maths which is based on solving fluency, reasoning and problem-solving concepts, using White Rose Maths as a basis. Lessons are adapted where necessary to meet the needs of pupils including those with special educational needs and disabilities. We develop children’s mental and written fluency as well as their ability to solve problems. We encourage children to ask critical questions, make links and articulate their reasoning.

Pupils are presented with mathematical challenges in exciting, creative and relevant ways in order to promote a positive and confident attitude towards the subject.  A concrete, pictorial, then abstract approach to teaching Maths allows our children to develop a deep and meaningful understanding of Maths.  We aim for pupils to see Maths as being relevant to their world and applicable to everyday life as well as being something that they will need as they move on through their school life and into the future.

Impact

Children at Lumley Junior School make good progress in maths and by the time they leave Year 6, are above the national average. Children feel confident in all aspects of maths and many achieve mastery of mathematical concepts to deepen their knowledge.

Maths is used throughout the curriculum in order to support and enhance other subjects.
