Curriculum – PE

Intent

At Lumley Junior School, we use the National Curriculum for Physical Education as the basis of our PE programme so that pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.

It is our vision that every child is given the opportunity to reach their full potential across a range of sporting disciplines and be encouraged to lead physically active lifestyles.  We believe that physical activity helps to improve concentration in lessons, overall attainment and pupils’ mental health and wellbeing. It is our belief that pupils should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help embed values such as teamwork, fairness, resilience and respect.

Implementation

We provide pupils with opportunities to participate in:

  • invasion games
  • gymnastics
  • dance
  • net and wall games
  • athletics
  • striking and fielding activities
  • swimming
  • outdoor and adventurous activity

Lessons are adapted where necessary to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.  PE is taught through ‘Core Tasks’, which provide a framework for assessment, whereby key skills such as: evaluating, improving, knowledge of health and fitness, performance, decision making and leadership are developed.  Pupils are assessed at the beginning of a unit of work and teaching staff then plan, differentiate and assess the needs of the children, before re-assessing their key skills at the end of the unit.  We provide interventions for children who have been identified as needing extra support with physical activity.

Where possible, we incorporate active learning into other subjects.  Using physical activity in core subjects inspires and motivates pupils.  Throughout the school day, pupils are encouraged to be active and participate in the Daily Mile, Jump Start Jonny fitness sessions and Personal Best Challenges.  After-school sport provides pupils with opportunities to participate in competitive leagues and competitions against other schools.  We actively participate in cross-country championships, netball, football and rugby leagues, as well as more non-traditional sports through intra-school and inter-school competitions organised by the School Sports Partnership.  Specialist coaches regularly work with staff to enhance PE and sport throughout the school.
