Curriculum – RE

Intent

We use the Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Durham as the basis of our RE programme.

The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education aims to ensure that pupils:

  • develop deepening knowledge and understanding about a range of religious and non-religious worldviews so that they can:
    • describe and explain beliefs and theological concepts
    • describe and explain some sources of authority and teachings within and across religious and non-religious traditions-describe and explain ways in which beliefs are expressed
    • know and understand the significance and impact of beliefs and practices on individuals, communities, and societies
    • connect these together into a coherent framework of beliefs and practices
  • gain and deploy deepening understanding of specialist vocabulary and terms
  • know and understand about religious diversity within the region, as well as nationally and globally
  • know and understand how religion can be defined and what is meant by the term “religious and non-religious worldviews” and with increasing clarity know that these worldviews are complex, diverse and plural
  • gain and deploy skills that enable critical thinking and enquiry in relation to the material they study
  • reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, ideas, values and beliefs with increasing discernment.

At Key Stage Two, we aim to provoke challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – KS2 Knowledge and Key Skills – updated September 2022

Implementation

We provide pupils with an enquiry-based approach to RE. Teaching staff use a stimulus at the beginning of a lesson or a topic so that children can develop their critical thinking by thinking of questions and ideas as to what they may be learning about.  Lessons are adapted where necessary to meet the needs of pupils including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Teaching develops children’s knowledge and understanding of a range of religious and non-religious world views.  Developing an awareness of the global world in which we live and learning about the impact of religion on individuals and communities, both locally, nationally and internationally is extremely important to us at Lumley Juniors.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage Two most children will:

  • Consider the impact these have for differing individuals and communities.
  • Understand how Christianity, Islam and Judaism express beliefs in different practices using symbolic objects and actions.

Critical Thinking

  • Raise controversial questions and express opinions and views and use sound reasons to back these up.
  • Show  appreciation for different perspectives, recognising the reasons given to support these viewpoints.
Express views and give reasons to back these up.
