Lumley Junior School

Enjoy and Achieve Together

Reading Approach

At Lumley Junior School we wish to encourage a love for reading that will last a lifetime. In July 2011 we refurbished our school library and added many titles to our existing collection. Our reading scheme was also renewed, since then it has been expanded twice. We mainly use Bug Club a scheme that follows on from that which is used at Lumley Infants. The earlier books in the range start with Phonic Bug, which is a systematic synthetic phonics programme. All of our books are fully aligned to Letters and Sounds, Book Banded and NC levelled. Our scheme is “fine levelled” to give smaller steps and wider breath in reading progression. As well as lots of fiction, it also includes non-fiction, comics and photo-novels. Recently we have bought Rapid Phonics Readers and a wider range of Comic for Phonics.

Our library is at the centre of our reading approach. Children use it to research using books, netbooks and iPads.  They are encouraged to read daily.

Each week, children spend two hours of lesson time developing a range of reading skills.
