Curriculum Overview
Lumley is a school where everyone matters and all are welcome. We, “Enjoy and achieve together.”
At Lumley Junior School, we are passionate about helping our children grow and develop into confident young people who are kind, resilient, respectful and hard working. Our school values, ASPIRE, are integral to everything we do at Lumley Junior School and we aim to incorporate these values when we teach our curriculum as well as developing the knowledge, understanding and skills pupils are expected to develop in every subject.
A – Positive Attitude and Ambition
We promote a ‘can do’ attitude and encourage all children to try their best in all lessons. Pupils gain the knowledge and skills needed for future learning and employment so they can achieve their ambitions.
S – Spirited and Successful
Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, providing challenge for all at appropriate levels. Everyone has the opportunity to be successful in their learning. The curriculum is planned to build on prior learning so that children can make sense of new knowledge whilst consolidating what they have already learnt.
P – Proud and Passionate
We encourage pupils to take pride in their work so they are keen to share their learning with others. Our curriculum is celebrated through displays, assemblies and special events in school. We use Weduc to share photos of our curriculum in action with our school family.
I – Individual and Inclusive
We teach children to celebrate difference and understand that they are all unique. Our SRE curriculum is embedded within a carefully planned PSHE program so children develop their individuality and personality whilst learning to appreciate the individuality of others.
R – Responsible, Resilient and Respectful
In all lessons, children are taught to take responsibility for their learning with increasing levels of independence as they progress through the school. By the time they leave Lumley Junior School, they should be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge they need for their secondary education and beyond.
E – Enthusiasm and Empathy
We want children to enjoy their learning and be enthusiastic about their work. Our curriculum is designed to offer exciting, stimulating lessons and we use visitors and trips where possible to offer first hand experiences to help children learn.
Reading
We believe that reading is fundamental to all learning and we ensure that pupils have ample opportunity not only to develop their reading skills but also to enjoy reading for pleasure. High quality books are available in classrooms and our library for children to access books for fun, books to support the curriculum and books to develop their reading ability. Our curriculum includes time dedicated for teachers to read to children as well as time for children to read to teachers. Please refer to our English Intent statement for more information.
A Lumley Curriculum
Our curriculum has been designed to enable children to learn about the area they live in. In particular, History and Geography use our local area and heritage to teach the skills and knowledge required. Please refer to our subject Intent statements for more information.
Our Curriculum Aims
At Lumley Juniors, we strive not only for academic success but also to build a tradition of respect, good manners, pride in work and sense of responsibility amongst our children. The health and wellbeing of all our pupils is paramount in all that we do in school. We hope they will have lots and lots of fun along their educational journey with us and that Lumley Junior School will be as special to them as they are to us.
Above all else, we want children to be safe, happy and enjoy coming to school.
